High electricity bills are one of the most common reasons homeowners contact us, and it's rarely as simple as "the heat pump is broken." In most cases, the system is technically working fine, it's just running far less efficiently than it should. Here's what's usually behind it.
Flow Temperature Is Set Too High
Every degree above what your home actually needs adds directly to your running costs. Heat pumps are most efficient at lower flow temperatures, so a system set higher than necessary, often left at an installer's default, can quietly cost far more than it should, without any obvious sign anything is wrong.
Weather Compensation Isn't Being Used
Weather compensation allows your heat pump to automatically adjust its flow temperature as outdoor conditions change. When this feature is switched off or misconfigured, the system works harder than it needs to on milder days, which adds up significantly over a full heating season.
The System Is the Wrong Size for Your Home
An oversized or undersized heat pump both lead to inefficiency, just in different ways. Oversized systems short-cycle, wearing components faster and running less efficiently. Undersized systems rely heavily on backup heating to stay warm, which is usually far more expensive to run.
Hot Water Settings Are Higher Than Necessary
Cylinders heated to higher temperatures than needed waste energy every day, particularly when boost or immersion settings are left active without you realising.
Poor System Balancing
If radiators or underfloor loops aren't balanced correctly, some rooms overheat while others struggle, pushing the whole system to work harder than it should to reach a comfortable average.
What You Can Do About It
Start by checking your flow temperature and weather compensation settings if you have access to your controller. If bills remain high after that, or you're not confident making changes yourself, an independent review can identify exactly what's driving the cost, without any pressure to replace equipment that may not need replacing.
High running costs are usually fixable, and rarely require a new system. In most cases, the answer lies in how the existing heat pump has been configured, not in the equipment itself.
