Common Design Problems We Find Before Installation
Getting heat pump sizing right is the single biggest factor in how well your system will perform, and it's also the thing installers most often get wrong. Here's what we check:
Oversized heat pump. This is the single most common issue we see. It usually happens because the heat pump has been selected using a rule of thumb rather than a proper room-by-room calculation, leading to short bursts of running, higher costs, more wear, and a less comfortable home.
Undersized heat pump. Less common than oversizing, but often more serious. An undersized heat pump may work perfectly during mild weather but struggle to keep your home warm on the coldest days, pushing the backup heater to run constantly and significantly increasing bills.
Radiators too small for the design. A correctly sized heat pump is only part of the equation. Radiators or underfloor heating also need to deliver enough heat at the lower flow temperatures a heat pump is designed to run at, and systems upgraded from a gas boiler often need resizing.
Flow temperature too high. Every degree higher than necessary increases running costs. A well-designed system should always aim for the lowest practical flow temperature.
Pipework too small. A heat pump can be correctly sized on paper but still perform poorly if the existing pipework can't carry the required water flow, reducing efficiency and limiting heat output.
Poor zoning strategy. Too many zones, incorrectly positioned controls, or zoning that hasn't been considered alongside the design can reduce efficiency and cause rooms to overheat or never quite reach temperature.
Unnecessary buffer vessels and low loss headers. These are sometimes essential, but frequently added as a default without being genuinely required, increasing cost and occasionally introducing the very short-cycling issues they're meant to prevent.
Incorrect hot water cylinder sizing. A cylinder that's too small may run out of hot water during busy periods, while one that's unnecessarily large wastes energy reheating water you don't need.
Weather compensation not configured properly. This allows the heat pump to automatically adjust its flow temperature as outdoor conditions change, and it's one of the biggest efficiency improvements available, yet it's often overlooked during design.
